.hack//GU takes place seven years after the whole incident in the .hack games."The World" has gone through a major change since then,it has even updated to a new version called,"The World:R2".But that's not the only change it has gone through,"The World" has become an outlaw haven.PKers are roaming about the place,doing as the players please.Because of this,three clans have been formed due to how unstable the game is now,each clan trying to over power one another.
GU is about 8 characters,how they will all conflict with the real world and the game world,to discover answers within the game or discover something that they have never realized before.

.hack//GU is seperated into 3 volumes,with these titles:
Volume 1:Saitan[Resurrection]
Volume 2:Kimi Omou Koe[A voice that reminds me of you]
Volume 3:Aruku you na Hayasa de[At walking speed]

According to an article from Gamewatch,in order to fully understand the history of The World,with the connection from the original .hack games,a "Terminal Disc" will be issued to the first volume of GU.But in order to unlock this data,you must use certain keys to open it,and these keys are found in all three volumes of GU.
